Buddha Shakyamuni

Buddha Shakyamuni, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, is the historical founder of Buddhism and is revered as the Sage of the Shakya Clan, which is what the name Shakyamuni means. He was born into a royal family in the 5th or 6th century BCE in what is now southern Nepal, and he lived a life of luxury until he encountered the realities of aging, sickness, and death. These experiences awakened a deep spiritual yearning in him, and he chose to renounce his princely life so he could seek a path beyond suffering.

After years of intense meditation and ascetic practice, Siddhartha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, and became the Buddha, meaning the awakened one. From that moment forward, he dedicated his life to teaching the Dharma, or the universal truths of existence, including the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. These teachings form the foundation of Buddhist philosophy and practice.
